Philadelphia Culture & Salon History

In the early 18th century, wigs were the main hair trend, especially in Philadelphia. In the early 20th century, women were wearing straight hair with an exposed forehead. Styles changed, but it is important to look at the timeline of events in technology and fashion that lead them to change into the trends of today.

Between 1915 and 1930, the hair dryer and improved perm machines were rolled out, which greatly changed how women wore their hair. The trend changed from straight hair to more curly and wavy looks, popularized by the introduction of rollers and cylinders.

Then, Marilyn Monroe came along and made the trend of shorter hair popular, and Audrey Hepburn only strengthened this trend. As more and more styles and treatments were being asked for, more and more salons started opening up in Philadelphia, which eventually lead to the point we are at today, in almost saturation.
